James,
The RTF (Rich Text Format) option supported by many word processing programs
such as MS Word, Open Office, Word Perfect, etc. can generally be converted
to text suitable for display on most systems and also for screen reading by
most of the screen readers for the blind. Adobe also offers a service to
the blind in which they will accept an uploaded file and will return it in
text format. That means to me that they (Adobe) have a suitable conversion
utility which I would love to see released to the Open Source community...

Thank you for your comment about meeting the needs of blind readers.
While I do have a preference for text, when "format" is important I
prefer PDF.
Are you aware of any tools that facilitate "formatting" with text?
