Hello Jacek and ISOC Chapter Delegates:
You are welcome. I hope these ideas that I shared help people understand
that while the Internet helps share ideas and our common humanity, it does
not instantly overcome differences in economic disparities.
I contribute at the $125/year level, and I basically do it because 1) I can
afford it for the time being; 2) I believe strongly in the history and the
purposes of ISOC; and 3) because I am old fashioned and believe that ISOC is
one of the few organizations that I can, in good conscience, contribute
money to.
By the way, because I am adopted into my lovely wife's family, I feel like I
am "Honorary Polish." So I feel that Poland is OUR country Jacek. In fact,
because I inist on taking LOT Polish Airlines from Chicago to Warsaw each
year, my wife tells me that I am more Polish than she is.
I know that there are know easy answers about membership structure and the
associated dues, but I do believe that we should be looking to corporations,
the government, and to educational institutions for some stronger levels of
financial commitment. After all, with all the current problems facing the
Internet, to name a few:
SPAM
Spyware & Ad-ware
Identity Theft
Phishing
Invasion of privacy
Stalking
Intellectual Property Issues
Copyright violations
Plagiarism
Domain Name Hijacking
China claiming, just this week, that the U.S. has a Global Monopoly on the
Internet
We certainly have much bigger fish to fry than to argue endlessly about
membership issues.
Let's get busy and start solving the REAL problems of the Internet. After
all, we are THE Internet Society.
Your friend,
Bill

Dear Bill,
Thank You for your kind words about my country and bringing the
basic economic relations
[which you could witness yourself] to the attention of others
[especially those who have never been in any developing country].

I fully respect your decision to support ISOC financially. But may be
for the sake of the current discussion
you may do us a favour and share with others the rationale of your
financial support?
You are the first person in this discussion [exept ISOC staff or BoTs],
who confirms his will to continue paying to ISOC. May be we can learn
from You why a member of ISOC should pay for his membership $75 and
drive this discussion into
constructive direction.
Please, also try to explain why you choose to pay $75 membership fee and
not the $125 honorary donation .
With the best regards,
Jacek
