Subject: [chapter-delegates] Press Release: New PICISOC board and
PacINET 2005

For Immediate Release:

The Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society (PICISOC) would like
to present its new board and its upcoming annual event PacINET 2005.

Members of the Pacific Islands Chapter have just elected their new
board. It is composed of the following people:

Hon. Chairman: Rajnesh Dhirendra Singh
Hon. Vice-Chairman: Franck Martin
Hon. Treasurer: Les Allinson
Hon. Secretary: Anju Mangal
Hon. Board Member: Tenanoia Simona Taupo
Hon. Board Member: Christina G (Kuper) Wini
Hon. Board Member: Titeem Auatabu

PICISOC is an organisation encompassing 22 Pacific Islands Countries and
Territories with the goal of promoting "Internet is for Everyone" and
fostering ICT development in the region. As such the board reflects this
philosophy with people from 5 different countries and from the
government and private sector.

PICISOC has around 300 individual members throughout the Pacific
Islands, representing the diversity of this geographical area.

The PICISOC web site is located at www.picisoc.org
<http://www.picisoc.org/> and is a Chapter of the Internet Society
(www.isoc.org <http://www.isoc.org/> ) which is the organisation in
charge of the Public Internet Registry (.org domain names), which also
provides support and a legal framework to the Internet Engineering Task
Force (www.ietf.org <http://www.ietf.org/> ), the organisation in charge
of making open Internet Standards.

PICISOC is organising its annual meeting, PacINET 2005, in Kiribati from
22-27 August 2005. The theme for this year is "Rural Technologies:
Connecting & Advancing Remote Communities through ICT". We have the
great honour of having as guest speaker, Dr Vinton G. Cerf. His name is
not well known to the general public but his achievements are. He
co-invented (with Dr Robert E. Kahn) TCP/IP, or in simple terms the
Internet. He deployed the first e-mail system run by a commercial entity
on the Internet, he co-founded ISOC and he is the current chairman of
ICANN, the organisation in charge of distributing and regulating domain
names, and is also often referred to as one of the "founding fathers of
the internet". Dr Vinton G. Cerf will also give a public lecture in
Suva, Fiji just after PacINET 2005. We are all excited about this unique
opportunity for the Pacific Islands.

PacINET 2005 will be held at the Kiribati Parliament. As a gesture of
goodwill to the People and Government of Kiribati for their support, a
wireless network system will be installed and handed over to the
Government of Kiribati at the conclusion of PacINET 2005. This will be
one of the first parliaments in the world to be fully connected. It is
hoped this technology will allow Members of Parliament to have
instantaneous access to reference and documents on any subject via the
Internet. They will be able to be in touch via e-mail with their
electorate, as well as their respective Departments and Ministries, and
it is hoped this will enhance parliamentary proceedings.

The complete agenda and registration details for PacINET 2005 have been
posted on the PICISOC web site: www.picisoc.org
<http://www.picisoc.org/>

This meeting is possible with the help of our current sponsors:
PATARA, Telecom Kiribati (TSKL), Directions Magazine, The Internet Users
Society of Niue and Vodafone Fiji.

PacINET 2005 is open to all, members or non-members and features
international speakers and presenters. There is no registration fee.
However if you would like to help us in any way it will be appreciated.
Please contact us if you want to sponsor this great event.
