Bill,
I agree with you and I believe that we have major issues that we need to
address to align ISOC global to understand these are the essential pillars
that form the primary foundation of ISOC in the 21st century. We need to do
as you have done with Mexico and achieve closer inter-chapter relations. I
would like to commence an exchange with your chapter so that we can begin to
do some concrete things together.

I believe that when we shape our purpose around the principle of service to
others, we open up a world of possibility that guides us to the essence of
true leadership. We are engaging in a discussion about what leadership means
to us here in Puerto Rico. We are not afraid to discuss the crisis of
leadership that we face on a societal level and we understand that we must
align our words with our actions. It is difficult work, but the rewards of
opening up this amazing vehicle called the Internet to others keeps us
motivated and inspired to go the distance to save and transform ISOC.

I do not doubt the motives of the existing leadership. I believe that when
they get up in the morning they wish to work for an open Internet and access
for all as I do. What I wish to avoid is what happens to organizations when
they encounter a little success and gain some badly needed resources. They
can forget their constituents, become self serving, and power centric.
Similar to what happens with politicians.

We must avoid this from happening here. I believe we can shift the course
and engage our leaders in a fruitful discussion that brings us closer. We
need trust building and the types of communications that Andrea and others
are doing.

Warmest regards,
Ramón Morales

Hola from Chicago, Ramon,

I agree with you. Your letter was well-written and expressed my sentiments
exactly.

By the way, this is the supportive e-mail I sent to Veni this past weekend:
----------------------
Dear Veni,

I am extremely disappointed that you were not included in the list on
nominees. This is unfair and a serious slight in my opinion. You have my
sincere condolences, and my support as a friend and colleague.

With developments like this, I am really concerned about ISOC's future now.

Please keep in touch.

--------End of Message to Veni----------------------

One of my great frustrations with ISOC is that it is more like the Internet
Argument Society rather than about getting anything effective done for the
Internet community.

See my comments that I wrote earlier in the currenty string of arguments
about membership, who we are and how we should operate:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I know that there are no easy answers about membership structure and the
associated dues, but I do believe that we should be looking to corporations,
the government, and to educational institutions for some stronger levels of
financial commitment. After all, with all the current problems facing the
Internet, to name a few:

SPAM

Spyware & Ad-ware

Identity Theft

Phishing

Invasion of privacy

Stalking

Intellectual Property Issues

Copyright violations

Plagiarism

Domain Name Hijacking

China claiming, just a few weeks ago, that the U.S. has a Global Monopoly on
the
Internet

We certainly have much bigger fish to fry than to argue endlessly about
membership issues.

Let's get busy and start solving the REAL problems of the Internet. After
all, we are THE Internet Society.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Keep in touch, Amigo!

Margaret,
With all due respect to your selection process, I wish to start a petition
process with the objective of adding Veni Markovski to the list of Board
candidates for the Chapter elections. While I understand that the two
presently selected have the qualifications and fit your committee's
criteria, I know I speak for many chapters who see in Veni a powerful voice
for change and for the transformation that ISOC must undergo if it is to
become a relevant global organization in the 21st Century.

If the current conditions continue and the Board and its entities continue
to ignore or pass up opportunities to address its crisis of leadership, we
will not turn the tide of disillusionment and marginality that actions such
as these cause in us who have seen the work of Veni, Pat and Rosa on this
list. While I am sure your committee did not intend this result, the fact
that you would select two people and not Veni shows how disconnected the
committee is from the pulse and the drive that is moving the chapters
forward.

I would like to know, under the current conditions, how many actual chapters
are alive and functioning, how many would be involved in the voting and what
is the actual number of petitions needed to place Veni on the ballot. I
would appreciate your help on this matter. If not, please direct me to those
who may have the answers.

Thanks,
Ramón Morales
