While you are tracking down early usage, I remember Jon (I think) using
the word "Catnet" (Concatenated Networks) before I heard the word
"Internet".
Is my memory playing tricks on me? (If so, it would not be the first time.)
I have not been able to find anything written but I vaguely remember a
document or drawing titled something like "Catnet Model".
