I looked through an archive of the SF Lovers digest, obtained from
archive.org, for examples of the angle bracket used for quoting.<br>

The first instance I found is from May 12, 1981 in which ">From"
occurs at the beginning of a line in the body of a message:<br>

>From this cute beginning (the story seems to be written for

The first instance I found in which several lines from another
message are quoted using ">" is this message from November 29,
1983:<br>
