Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware, last weekend Dr Brian Haberman was appointed as the new chair of the Board of Trustees, succeeding Ted Hardie, who was the chair for the last six years. Brian has been a member of the board since 2021, when the IETF appointed him. The Board of Trustees (BOT) is composed of an equal number of members elected by chapters and appointed by the IETF and OMAC. Although most ISOC members (a larger majority of chapter members) are unaware of the relevance of the BOT and its chair, it “provides strategic direction, oversight, inspiration, and advice in support of the Internet Society’s mission and vision”.

There has never been a BOT chair emerging from chapter-elected members (well, Fred Baker was elected by chapters but belonged to the IETF as well).

It is time to reflect on the role of chapter members in the BOT. As only a third of the votes are in the hands of our elected members, any proposition or initiative that benefits the largest group of ISOC members is easily overruled. The simplest explanation is that business objectives are not always compatible with social interests. Any ISOC member observing the public meetings of the BOT can easily see how these initiatives are neither understood nor approved. If any concession is made, it usually implies a very complex process. In the end, support for chapter-driven initiatives will always face strong opposition, as it does not fit ISOC's business. But is it not the “business” to make the Internet available to everyone?

Yours,

Luis Martinez
