<p>Dear Chapter Leaders,<br>
</p>
<p>once upon a time ... In order to support its work for an open,
accessible, and strong Internet; in order to protect it against
monopolistic attacks from big companies; in order to foster
innovation, creativity and unexpected use, ISOC has set-up an
Advanced Membership administration System (AMS). It was
implemented carefully following open standards (as from IETF,
W3C ...), providing excellent usability, privacy, and
accessibility. A carefully chosen Internet-canny and innovative
medium size company was mandated with the implementation. An
internal group of ISOC experts carefully supervised this work
... and they lived happily ever after.</p>
<p>OK, just kidding. Seriously, back in 2020 ISOC had the
audacious idea to let members participate in the requirements
analysis for AMS. This was called Membernova Initiative. (To be
fair: ISOC took care that this did not effect much.) Membernova
was the name of the AMS used back then. In order to recognize
the progress since then a Membernova anniversary day was
launched to be on March 15th. But Membernova is history now and
so the anniversary had to be renamed in 2024. The new name is
"AMS celebration day".</p>
<p>There are too many open issues with AMS. E.g. unfortunately I'm
still not allowed to provide AMS with a list of registered
Chapter Members. So AMS has to live with fake data. And I have
to admit that my last year's promise, to show you how to
register Chapter Members with AMS, cannot be resolved therefor.<br>
</p>
<p>So I decided to make E-Mail communication within ISOC this
year's subject. Remember: with AMS we "make simple things
complex again" and mess it all up.</p>
<p>ISOC obviously uses different styles of group communication.
There is e.g. this Chapter-delegates mailing list. Members
receive messages to the mailing list and these are synchronized
with the Internet Society Chapter Portal. Simple filters allow
to archive and search messages with any modern mail client. Good
so.</p>
<p>Not so other groups like Internet Policy, Community Portal
Updates and more. Mails go to my private Mail address sent by an
anonymous <a href="mailto:mailer@isoc.de" target="_blank">mailer@isoc.de</a>
with an awesome "Reply to" something like </p>
<blockquote>
<p><a href="mailto:3uykghtxob3jjt10.6tazq4euh6jfcvrj@l1ef2ykhvgrduwm3.olow1.dn-71ceimaa.usa576.chatter.salesforce.com" target="_blank">3uykghtxob3jjt10.6tazq4euh6jfcvrj@l1ef2ykhvgrduwm3.olow1.dn-71ceimaa.usa576.chatter.salesforce.com</a>. </p>
</blockquote>
<p>And to make it even more transparent many mails end with:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><img src=<a href="http://cdn.mailscanner.info/1x1spacer.gif" target="_blank"><font color="red"><b>MailScanner has
detected a possible fraud attempt from
"cdn.mailscanner.info" claiming to be</b></font>
"http://cdn.mailscanner.info/1x1spacer.gif"</a> width="2"
height="1" alt="Web Bug from <a href="https://community.internetsociety.org/servlet/eM=M" target="_blank">https://community.internetsociety.org/servlet/eM=M</a>...
/><br>
</p>
</blockquote>
<p>You know what? Mails containing a "1x1spacer.gif" are
considered trackers and classified as spam by my filters. (And
my DNS blocks <a href="http://cdn.mailscanner.info" target="_blank">cdn.mailscanner.info</a>.)</p>
<p>Mails often end with: "We respect your right to privacy - view
our policy". which hold a link to e.g.</p>
<blockquote>
<p><a href="https://click.mail.isoc.org/?qs=3eea61e07305feba25a3e0b896d16568f693a88f5fe8b4728dd2782620aca1c488d971cd4b0dd92fdb2846741df7ff219139d284110d4e6a" target="_blank">https://click.mail.isoc.org/?qs=3eea61e07305feba25a3e0b896d16568f693a88f5fe8b4728dd2782620aca1c488d971cd4b0dd92fdb2846741df7ff219139d284110d4e6a</a> </p>
</blockquote>
<p>or </p>
<blockquote>
<p><a href="https://click.mail.isoc.org/?qs=3eea61e07305feba2e236580bb16e112b5220dbefb1c6641982304fd26f3b8d7f25dbd0d796bb0695e1c7bb67cfc285621382b95c3577db2" target="_blank">https://click.mail.isoc.org/?qs=3eea61e07305feba2e236580bb16e112b5220dbefb1c6641982304fd26f3b8d7f25dbd0d796bb0695e1c7bb67cfc285621382b95c3577db2</a>. </p>
</blockquote>
<p>Obviously there are many links to ISOC's privacy policy. "Honi
soit qui mal y pense" as our french colleagues would comment.</p>
<p>Beside of this there is much more progress. E.g. I used to
receive E-Mails containing contact data for individuals who
expressed interest in a Chapters membership. I used to process
these mails by a script to welcome people and inform about our
fee policy. Most people lost their interest in a membership when
they read "fee" and where dropped from our database
automatically. With the new AMS these mails were discontinued.
When I complained mails were sent again. Good so? The only
message in the new mails is "somebody has expressed interest".
Privacy by ISOC.</p>
<p>I also hate to be subscribed to lists or groups automatically.
I'd prefer opt-in - just to keep track - but being registered by
default. But that's another story.</p>
<p>Long live <a href="http://salesforce.com" target="_blank">salesforce.com</a>! Don't worry and have a happy AMS
celebration day,<br>
</p>
