</strong></p><p>The alliance of five major US ISPs (AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast,
Time Warner Cable and Verizon) and the rightsholders groups Motion
Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Recording Industry Association
of America (RIAA) has announced that the Copyright Alert System <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/isps-and-tracking-company-ready-to-start-six-strikes-anti-piracy-scheme-120928/" target="_blank">will be launched in 2012</a>.
Also known as “six strikes” system, it will be administered by the
Center for Copyright Information. The participating ISPs cover
collectively three-fourths of all US Internet users. The service
providers will implement monitoring measures to allow third-party
companies to detect copyright infringements of their clients. Users will
be warned to trigger behavioral changes. Once they reach the fifth and
sixth warning rounds, ISPs are going to resort to so-called “Mitigation
Measures” that are developed at the discretion of the different ISPs.
These can include reduced bandwidth or automatic start-pages with
educational information. Moreover, rightsholders could file lawsuits
against the users. It is possible that ISPs might <a href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/isps-preparing-to-embrace-copyright-alert-syste/" target="_blank">even choose to ultimately disconnect</a> their clients, similar to the<a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/262313/french_piracy_law_claims_first_innocent_victim.html" target="_blank"> HADOPI</a> three strikes system implemented by law in the French jurisdiction.</p><br><div>
