WIPO First Outreach on the International Music Registry (IMR) for<br>
Users in Geneva, April 24, 2012<br>

 The growth of the Internet as a delivery mechanism for music over the<br>
last decade has challenged the music rights management architecture.<br>
The need to make it faster, easier, and simpler to find who owns what<br>
rights in music has become increasingly important, not just in the<br>
developed countries, but throughout the world and points to the need<br>
for an international system that ‘ties together’ the different<br>
rights-management systems currently in use in different countries.<br>
<br>
A single, authoritative source of information about rights in music is<br>
a universal and essential good for the development of a healthy<br>
digital market for creative content.  To achieve this goal the World<br>
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is providing technical and<br>
administrative support to the International Music Registry (IMR)<br>
Dialogue <<a href="http://www.internationalmusicregistry.org/portal/en/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.internationalmusicregistry.org/portal/en/index.html</a>>,<br>
which engages stakeholders from all sectors of the music industry and<br>
all regions in the world.  The IMR is global in nature and intends not<br>
to rival any existing copyright infrastructure but to establish a<br>
system that will enhance existing databases and identifiers and act as<br>
a platform for their interoperability.<br>

With this vision, a recent Study on the Role and Functions of the<br>
International Music Registry<br>
<<a href="http://www.internationalmusicregistry.org/portal/en/news/2012/news_0002.html" target="_blank">http://www.internationalmusicregistry.org/portal/en/news/2012/news_0002.html</a>><br>
 identified a number of functions that can be undertaken at the<br>
international level with the support of WIPO to achieve the objective<br>
of an effective copyright infrastructure in the digital era.  A series<br>
of IMR dialogues has been launched to look at different alternatives<br>
and to seek greater involvement of right owners and users from all<br>
regions of the world.<br>
<br>
In the context of this, WIPO is organizing the first IMR briefing for<br>
users at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva, on Tuesday April 24, 2012.<br>
The meeting will serve to showcase developments in this initiative as<br>
well as to discuss the modalities of possible involvement of users in<br>
the future.   Participation is opened to users.<br>
