<pre wrap="">Hi Grigori,
Yes , it's true what you are saying.
Still, it's up to Wikipedia (editors ) to do the quality check of the information, not up to Isoc staff or chapter representative to chase and update this kind of information regarding Isoc.
You are the source, not Wikipedia.
If you start accepting this kind of situation , in a near future you will have to accept wasting your (valuable) chapter manager time on Wikipedia , twitter , youtube, facebook and future user generated content to "correct" disinformation.
It would be the beginning of a disaster in terms of publishing standards, ethics of journalism and intellectual property .
I already see CNN and other networks starting to publish content " according to youtube". Next step would be to see OECD or rating agencies lowering Armenia or US AAA qualificative "according to wikipedia study".

Ed

Eduard,
Our Chapter representative has all rights to edit information about our
Chapter URL in order to provide correct information. Of course, first of
all necessary to inform ISOC staff about any changes in our Chapter
URL, then try to inform others about these changes, including Wikipedia.

<pre wrap="">Dear Veni ,
Technically , anyone can edit Wikipedia content about Isoc, and this is precisely where i see a problem of interfering with the user-generated content abou an information concerning both chapters and Isoc as an organization.
Who has the legal and moral authority to do so ?
For example i have the legal power to deal with Isoc Romania issues (including wikipedia content ) , but neither the legal or moral power to edit other Isoc related content.
Technically , yes , as chapter delegates we can edit Wikipedia page about Isoc, but from a legal /ethical point of view we shouldn,t , this is my opinion.
Wikipedia should have a special , specific policy about information related to Legal institutions (corporations, ngo's ) , Countries, etc .
Just because something it's trendy and cool on Internet , it doesn't mean it's right :)

If I have had my computer, I would have edited it by now. Just anyone on this list can do it, so just go and edit it.

I see it like another utopic attempt to share unvalidated , unreliable , contested knowledge .
Updating Isoc page is a minor thing, the real question is : Does Isoc caution Wikipedia way of disseminating information ? Updating the page would men that you agree with Wikipedia framework.
I don't know about the situation in US, Poland or other countries, but teachers here in Romania are very skeptical about "i checked on wikipedia , so it must be true, richt, teacher ? " attitude.
Comments on this ???

And to be fair I thought it was just a ping for our
communications staff to carefully apply some corrections.
This is what Khaled would expect, this is what members
would expect, this is what the world would expect. Like
it or not - as long as Wikipedia is the first point
of information on any subject for many it deserves some
attention. That Wikipedia is not free of errors and
conflicts is no reason for us to ignore it.
But obviously it _only_ started another big chapters
discussion thread instead. As it was before with "INET2012
planning" and our "new Website quality" that has not
improved since 5 months now. Would it be fair to assume
that ISOC has a problem managing its communications
(with members and the world)?

<pre wrap="">There are at present different opinions ? apply Wiki general editing
rules or not? I think it is most important to consider some fundamentals:
The Wiki has information related to ISOC as a whole (including the
list saying which Chapters exist, supposedly not updated at present),
and it has access to specific information on Chapters.
I consider it to be surprising that a publicly accessible Wiki on ISOC
exists and there is no immediate clarification from staff saying who
(at ISOC Global) is responsible to make sure that this information is
correct. I would appreciate to receive, on this list, such
clarification to be given soonest - as the Wiki is pubic - stating who
is responsible for what, related to this Wiki.
As long as there is no clarity who is responsible to make sure that
the list of Chapters is correct, it is also not enough to say that the
Chapters are responsible to edit their related content.
Is a Wiki ? with wide open editing rights - really appropriate to
carry important information about ISCO Global and ISOC Chapters?
But maybe a different kind of Wiki is important, as a public forum on
ISOC affairs - with links to authoritative institutional information?
The new ISOC website has more information than I can research quickly
to find out if there is also an address like ?ISOC in a nutshell?
(easily accessible from the main page) which would give some really
brief and basic information about ISOC Global, and a list where all
Chapter website links can be accessed by one mouse click.

<pre wrap="">I probably have different view than some of you.
It is true that Wikipedia is based on the open process to users to
edit content about any subject they want to and there is volunteers
around the world that are taking of some corrections or updating
But some famous personalities or organization take care about their
wikipedia page by dedicated PR/Comm staff that will ensure that
information on the page are correct because they know that wikipedia
come along the first search result in the online search.
So I think it is probably important for the comm ISOC staff to take
care of it

<pre wrap="">Actually it would be perfectly fine if you edit it. No need to
refer it to Isoc staff to edit it, which also would be inappropriate.
