All:

Like I mentioned before it was not my intention to report the bug directly into this list, but as Alejandro say the community has an amazing power of self-regulate. The result was that other people did report to have similar problems with the AMS. I did not hear anybody else in the community complaining about that exchange of emails except ISOC Global.

Anyhow, I think to have a bug tracker for the AMS will be an excellent idea. That way we all can see the progress of bugs being fixed.

Best.

-ed

Anyow

On Fri, Aug 13, 2010 at 12:56 AM, Alejandro Pisanty <apisan@servidor.unam.mx> wrote:

thanks a lot for this most considerate response.

Email lists which represent real communities of good-faith people have amazing powers of self-regulation. We have seen that in this list a number of times. Let them be.

Yes, a bugtraq or any similar mechanism would be welcome. That would still not prevent people asking people about bugs, warning about bugs, or discussing bugs.

And when the community itself gets fed up... we know how to make ourselves heard!

So, don't protect us too much from ourselves, I'd say.

hi Alejandro, all,

Please accept our apologies for the unfortunate choice of words. The request was motivated out of consideration for others in terms of the volume of traffic to the list rather than anything else. Perhaps, a solution, as Franck noted, would be to set up a mailing list for reporting bugs (as distinct from feature requests?) where the archives are public. That way those who are interested in the conversation could subscribe, and the archives would be visible.

I'll talk with my colleagues to see what is possible.

Best wishes
Anne
Sabrina,

I will take exception to the use of "polluting" in the sense you've used it here; I find it excessive.

I do think that most bug reports should be made discreetly and directly to those responsible for confirming and repairing them. We all know bugs, and we should therefore know we never are 100% sure what we find is actually a bug.

And, there is no need to leverage the power of the group just to report a bug. In fact that conduct can be nasty and useless, and only cause hurt in relationships in the long run.

But... there is also room for discussion that must be preserved. We may not be sure if something is going wrong and wish to ask colleagues whether they are seeing the same as we do, for example, or warn others about it, which is not going to happen by the silent route.

So I guess we can all agree that it better to report bugs to the people who can act on them, but can't really forbid their discussion on the list.

Yours,
Dear Eduardo and Norbert,

Thanks very much for your messages and feedback to the AMS which are appreciated!

I can re-assure you that my colleagues from the AMS team work very hard and try to fullfill all the requests that come in. However, one size never fits all and we need to balance the needs and requirements of the majority. Not an easy job and it can leave disappointment for some. You probably know this from your own projects.

Please keep sending your suggestions to the AMS team (rather than poluting this list) as it is very helpful to us in developing the AMS further. I especially would like to thank Norbert at this point for his valuable contributions and advise he has given us about the usability of the AMS.

Thanks,
Dear Eduardo,
thanks for sharing this - so I do not feel any longer as if I were the only one who sees problems.
The Cambodia Chapter is not yet really functional, because we wanted to start-up with a membership drive using the ISOC system provided - but with every new user, we still discover something which is not clear or creates questions for the new user, where we hoped it would rather provide an easily understandable inviting access.
Thanks to those at HQ who work on it - but it takes much more time than we thought. Now some little changes have not been made because of the holidays - I remember holidays, but how can I explain this here, where - European, Western, whatever traditional - holidays do not exist. Or how to explain, in our vibrant, emerging IT world, that ISOC - the INTERNET society - does not allocate more staff time to have its core software - the membership admin - redone in in a couple of weeks, and not only in several years.
But still: The Internet is for everyone! So we continue to struggle,
I just created a test user account with my email and the system allowed it. The bug happens to be the fact that it allowed me to create and account with an email that already existed. When I looked at the account, it changed my previously selected name, i.e. Eduardo Diaz and changed it to Test Account which was the user name that I used to create the account. The system should not allow this behaviour.
Every time I use this system something goes wrong.
Please verify and let me know.
