Hello Mike,

comments at #

On Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 6:51 AM, Mike Todd <miketodd@miketodd.com> wrote:

I have read the messages from both you and Veni
regarding the survey. I think I should go ahead and publish the survey
based on Veni's request and your suggestions for improvements in the "survey
questions".

My suggestion is not any way related to the content of the questions. I had not sought to alter the points of the survey All that I have done is make each question in harmony with the required response. It is not a survey with multiple classes of responses, such as very important to very unimportant, very true to totally untrue, i fully agree to I totally disagree, must happen to should not happen.

In the initial questionnaire there were questions in a certain format ( for e.g questions as statements ) or which the logical response could only be ranging from I fully agree to I totally disagree It did not quite fit into the very important to very unimportant ranking so it was bound to confuse the respondent and ultimately would produce either a poor response or misleading results. So I thought of two options, either make each question with its own response set that fitted the question individually, or fit all questions to the very important to very unimportant response. Beyond that I did not propose any new points nor did I seek to alter the questions.
survey questions in a Google Docs spreadsheet, which is wonderful.
However, I also have some "recommended changes" and see a need for some
basic definitions or use of more simplistic language for the survey
questions and also have some additional concerns.

#The idea of sending an editable document is just that. All I had done is provide a format to work on. In the first few minutes I 'reframed' the same questions and posted it as in-line body text in the thread, and then I thought that it would help if I formatted the spreadsheet that I worked on a little, and upload it. So I did that.

First, and this is just an example, your version of
the questions has an item that states "Make it difficult for Terrorists and
Extreme Groups to use the Internet". While I can see the direction of your
thinking, I am concerned that there may be many different interpretations and
opinions about "who is a terrorist" and "what is an extreme group" and other
things like "what is pornography" and more amorphous things like what is the
line between nurturing, loving and supporting children and taking advantage of
them and crossing the line into abuse. These are all areas that, depending
on the mental position of the person taking the survey, may provide very
different or even unreliable or incomparable results.

# I am not getting into all that in this survey task.. There was a question (or a statement) "enabling terrorist groups to do bad things" - it did not quite fit in, so had to be rephrased in some manner. That is what I had done.

I am also concerned about how the spreadsheet may
be used by different people completing the survey. I was thinking that
some might put and "x" in each cell that indicates selection.
Alternatively, someone else might use a numbering scheme to indicate the
relative strength of their feelings about each statement. I don't think
this alternative provides a more easily understood survey tool.

#It would indeed be a very bad idea if I had suggested that a spreadsheet is used inplace of a very conveninet tool such as survey monkey. The spread sheet was to edit the points, just that.
our Holiday Weekend...

#And I will work on my style of communication. It turns out that something always goes wrong and takes me by surprise.
