Dear Alejandro Pisanty,

If a purposeful agenda is drawn up and if the event happens in Paris, not just from the chapter, but from the IT Industry in India, there could be a thousand participants. This is not altogether a guess, but I am deducting this from India's participation in overseas trade fairs and expositions - which in some events was not in thousands but in tens of thousands. I don't have any figures for events that are not related to trade.

There is no reason why the INET could also be an Internet Expo to offer opportuniteis for companies such as CISCO, Facebox or Camcast to showcase and promote their interent technolgies to decison makers from the Internet related industry and governments. If it is organized that way, INET would be more than financially sustained by corporate participants.

As for participation from Chapter delegates in an event of this nature, not only our chapter in India, but apart from a handful of chapter delegates who are seen in ICANN and other meetings, most chapter delegates would require fellowships. If this can be planned as an event with a participation of 3000 + Internet professionals from the Industry and government with ISOC global reaching out to the corporate members of ISOC, IETF and ICANN to ensure paid participation from the Industry, participation in the "Internet Technology Expo" as commercial sponsors, combined with a fellowship for a hundred chapter delegates from ISOC, the event could become a huge event, irrespective of whether it happens in Paris of at an exotic or busy location in India.

From ISOC's perspective Internet is basic global infrastructure, free as much as possible. But the reality is that the Internet is an economic eco system with trillions of dollars in commercial flow. An Internet event from ISOC ought to be a huge success. Perhaps we could invite an opinion from one or two large event management companies on this.
some of us tried to revive the INET and found that the financial conditions a few years ago were not making it sustainable any more. Of course this could have changed again but as Fred says, the financial risk is huge.
Hello Fred Baker and Martin,

I looked at the INET page, it looks like a wonderful event, which was
unfortunately discontinued as poined out Fred, due to the macro economic
environmental changes of the times.

Had ISOC continued with this as an annual event, ISOC would have emerged
far, far more stronger.

I think we should bring it back. This should be a grand event, carefully
planned, should bring in Internet professionals from the world over, the IT
industry, government and research groups, should be a huge event, for four
days as INET 2001 with one or two hours of concurrent meetings happening on
the sidelines for ISOC insiders.

Can ISOC's Board and Staff take a look at this again? If you give us the
initial encouragement, we can organize this event in Bangalore or Goa,
India, with a local participation of at least 3000 people, not counting
overseas participation. Could be an ISOC global, broadly adminstered by ISOC
Global or by a committee of chapter delegates from worldwide, actively
organized by us as the local chapter.

Say yes, and we will draw up a concept and an overall plan for the first of
the new series of INET annual conferences....
What were INET conferences like ? Was this an ISOC event that brought
together everyone ?

It tried to. Attendance fell off quite a bit when the tech bubble burst,
and it was finally discontinued due to the financial liabilities. For
example, INET 2004 in Barcelona was done with a partner, and could really
only say that it added 100 people to the partner's existing conference.
