I think it is ok that Genes spoke to them to alert them of the issue,
so that they have time to prepare an alternative to the name of their
conference.

I think a phone call was in order, to establish a friendly dialogue. A
note on letterhead may be too formal and not encourage them to comply
quickly, especially as I'm still not sure if Internet Society is an
enforceable registered trade mark.

I would even propose for ISOC to sponsor (as a token) the conference
(enough to pay a tea break but not more), if they immediately change
the name and add the Internet Society logo on their publications.
However someone needs to see that they abide to ISOC goals, but at
first sight, it seems so. It would serve the purpose of having all the
participants learning about ISOC quickly.

To make it clear.
I initiated a contact principally, as an individual separate from ISOC
HQ., I could informall feel them out and urge cooperation because
there are so many people in ISOC chapters and IETF people around
the world who would take very, very badly any attempt to hijack the
Internet Society name. I made that point personally, in my own name,
not speaking for ISOC.
After that, the ball is in your court and I will not contact them again.
Should they contact me, I will pass on the message with no response
from me.
Hope that is helpful.

Gene,
thanks. Although I have to admit to a bit of surprise that you would
initiate this without coordinating with us first. We are drafting a
note to them from the Geneva office and it would not be helpful for
them to receive multiple phone calls or contradictory messages.
We'll work it from here and update everyone when we have some news.
Regards,
Lynn
